It is a unique art from Murshidabad in former Bengal. Kantha Work is essentially done on old sarees, dhotis and other apparel.
Kantha Work Saree

It is a running stitch on the sarees in the form of motifs such as animals, birds, flowers, simple geometrical shapes and scenes from everyday life.
Weaving

Bengali women used to mend their old clothes by making designs from a strand of thread off the colorful border of their saris.
Pure Hnadloom

This led to an art practiced by rural women securing them a respectable means of earning a modest income. Kantha work done on a saree gives it a wrinkled and wavy look and transforms old clothes into extraordinarily new creations.
Traditional Look

Though the running stitch is most popular for its ease, other forms of stitch such as darning stitch, satin stitch and loop stitch are also used.
Kantha stitching is also employed in the making of quilts, known as Nakshi Kantha.
Women use old saris and other cloth, layering them with the kantha stitch to make small blankets and bedspreads, for children.
Kantha embellishes a wide range of garments, such as sarees, dupattas, shirts, bedding and a variety of other fabrics in cotton and silk.
Old saris and dhotis are transformed by kantha work to serve as gifts for beloved ones.
Kantha Work Saree

Based on the use of the fabric, Kantha is divided into seven different types, of which Lep Kantha and Sujani Kantha are famous.

Kantha is a way of life; a tradition that is still followed meticulously.

kanthas are prepared for small babies to lie on, wedding kanthas are made by mothers and gifted to their daugthers and kantha is present on the ceremonial cloth meant for funeral rites.

TRADITIONAL LOOK PURE CHANDERI SILK SAREES FROM MADHYA PRADESH@UNNATISILKS

With plain to moderately adorned patterns or motifs and small but attractive coloured borders and exquisite pallus with some adornment, Chanderi sarees have been popular for the extremely fine texture and sheer quality.

Handloom Wear

The entry of the Chanderi Saree in its new avatar of fusion Sicos (blends in silk and fine cotton) has again sparked fresh interest in a fabric that since traditional times has never ceased to amaze.

Weaving

Enhancing the beauty further is the ‘Booti’, ‘Butti’ or motif, which is an interlaced, hand-woven, shape, consisting of gold, silver or copper coated threads.
Fancy Look

The Asharfi Butti, or Gold Coin shaped Booti has been a popular choice since earlier times, though the pure gold or silver used in its making has given way to tested Zari, which is woven from synthetic yarn by needles of different sizes.

The bigger version of the ‘Butti’ is popularly known as ‘Butta’.
A major difference in the making methods is that the ‘Bootis’ of hand-woven Chanderi saris, retain their shape and appearance throughout the life of the fabric, with no thread coming out from the ‘Butti’ structure.
Buttis once only hand-woven on the fabric, have been replaced by gold-printed ‘Butti’prints on the silk fabric body.
Corporate Wear

The fusion range of Chanderi Sicos offered by Unnati Silks includes a whole range of Kalamkaris. Kalamkari, is craftsmanship through the use of a pen, an ethnic art involving hand-painting or block printing on Sarees.

Subjects of Gods, temple hangings, epic scenes and other religious themes, flora and fauna as motifs with trees, creepers, flowers, leaves, birds as some of the popular subjects adorn the Chanderi Sico saree.

Marked features of this fusion style are simplicity, good use of natural organic colours .

Employed on the Chanderi Sico Saree, the Kalamkari addition through hand block prints and stylish pen work makes it look grand, that the Saree becomes apt for weddings, bridal attire, corporate wear, as also suitable for festive occasions like Sankranthi, Diwali, Dushera, Pongal etc.

PURE HANDLOOM COTTON BAGRU PRINTED SAREES FROM RAJSTHAN @UNNATISILKS

Bagru, a village in Rajasthan, is famous for its unique century-old Bagru Prints. Bagru Prints are known for their unique use of Natural Dyes and Hand Block Printing.

SHOP ONLINE PURE HANDLOOM BAGRU PRINTED SAREES ON
Wooden Hand Blocks are blocks of wood with holding grips on one side and a flat smooth surface or pressing side with design engraved on it on the other.

Designs engraved are transferred to the fabric by filling colours in the etched cavities and giving a sharp hit to the pressed block on the cloth.

From the entire quantity of cotton cloth desired sizes for colouring are cut. This is based on the nature of the fabric; saree, bedspread, dupatta or whatever, according to the individual measurements provided and in the numbers specified.

The two-fold process of dyeing and block printing then begins. The fabric is pre-washed and soaked for several hours together to allow for dirt, oil and other contaminants to separate out.

The smearing of the fabric or cloth to be dyed, is with Fuller’s Earth, brought from the riverside.
It is then dipped in turmeric water. Fuller’s Earth washed away imparts a creamish colour to the fabric.
Then it is soaked in the solution of Harda or fruit of the myrobalan plant and dried in the sun which gives it a yellowish cream hue.
This is a unique feature of Bagru Prints and the process is instrumental for the colour fastness of the Print dyes that would be applied.
The fabric is then printed with natural dyes or colorants which are derived from plants and animals. Different blocks with different colours are used for the different parts of the overall design.

Since a majority of the natural dyes are from plants, Bagru Prints are also referred to as ‘eco-friendly’ prints.

The primary colours are available from the following substances. Blue is available from Indigo, with desired shade got from increasing the concentration or diluting it. Green is available through indigo mixed with pomegranate.
Red is through the Madder Root, while yellow is from turmeric. After the fabric is completely block printed it is dried and later put in vats of boiling water containing alum and other agents.
The solution with fabric in it is constantly stirred to prevent sticking to any portion of the vessel.
The process is complete with the fabric being washed again to remove excess colour and any other sticking impurities.

Hand Block Printing using natural colours is done mostly on fabrics such as sarees, quilts, bed covers, though pillow covers, turbans and other smaller items of cloth are also taken up. Themes are generally floral prints, geometrical shapes etc.

Bagru prints are done on off-white, ivory white or beige background sarees. Motifs of circular designs, flowers, fruits, birds create allure on fabrics like crepe, georgette, chiffon, silk, cotton.

Exotic Bagru prints are quite popular on south handloom cotton sarees woven with zari borders.

Unnati Silks has a good collection of Bagru prints on Rajasthani kota cotton sarees and Dupion silk sarees.
