The Bomkai Saree, an ethnic
combination of ikat style and supplementary thread work, showcases the unique
excellence of tribal art. Bomkai a tribal village in Orissa, is famed for its ethnic handloom cotton sarees woven on pit looms, combining ikat and
supplementary thread work.
The exclusive Bomkai cotton Saris employ
the ikat style of tie-dye, where the threads are dyed with contrasting colours
before they are woven with a special ‘extra weft’ technique. This traditional
art uses vegetable dyes to a large extent, with a leaning toward artificial
colours in present day creations.
The
weaving of the Bomkai Saree, involves the usual thread movement of the warp
(lengthwise lay of the threads) and the weft (breadth wise feed of thread),
finely controlled through an arrangement mechanism on the loom. The resulting
pattern of interstices provides strength to the fabric. The special mechanism
on the loom allows for special designs to be woven on the main weave to
seamlessly merge with the saree as a homogeneous pattern.
Black,
yellow, orange, maroon, are the preferred hues. Bright coloured panels with
extra motifs on a highly contrasting background make this tribal art fabric
uniquely stand out. Motifs commonly adorning the fabric are bitter gourd, the
atasi flower, the kanti-phul or small flower, peacocks and birds, elephants, Konark
temple, conches.The
initial or large motif known as Buttah, such a bird sitting on a tree, is woven
on the body.
This
accentuates the fabric look. The smaller motifs decorate the borders and pallu,
and have pomegranate seeds, Saara seeds and temple spires as popular subjects.
Inspiring awesome A special method of cutting warp ends of a colour and
re-tying them to different coloured warp ends, known as ‘muha-johra’ is used to
create a dense layer of colours at the end piece (pallu) of the Saree. Bomkai cotton Sarees are embroidered with temple spire
patterns on the border. Some of these sarees have contrast pallu and extra
motifs such as animal prints, geometric designs, birds, elephant and flowers
adorning it.
The Bomkai Silk saree resembles
the ikkat designed Sambalpuri sari. This design in the four colours of red,
green, white and blue can be identified by the patterns of flora, fauna, nature
and the Konark temple inscriptions.Bomkai Handloom Cotton Sarees with striking colours, contrast pallu
and extra motifs on the background are attractive, finding good use as daily
casual, college, corporate and office wear.
